Big prize for safest hands
The annual Cup Match Safe Hands Award will celebrate its tenth anniversary at Wellington Oval this week.
This year's recipient will receive the Cal (Bummy) Symonds Cup, pocket a $1,000 cash prize, two round-trip tickets to a US gateway city, new playing kit as well as a dinner voucher for two at Greg's Steakhouse in Hamilton.
Since its inception in 1997, the award has been decided by a panel of judges who choose the best fielder during the two days of Cup Match.
Last year St. George's colt Rodney Trott was bestowed the honour after becoming the first fielder to hold four catches in a match since former Somerset skipper Wendell (Woodgate) Simmons achieved the feat in 1975.
Trott is only the second St. George's player to win the award behind Clay Smith who was the first in 2002.
In 2003, former Somerset skipper Janeiro Tucker ¿ a cousin of the legendary Symonds ¿ became the first cricketer to win the award twice.
The Bank of Butterfield are the sponsors for this year's award.
