Gibbons to coach East End youth team

Noel Gibbons has been appointed as head coach of St.George’s Cricket Club’s Under-16 team for the upcoming season.

The former top all-rounder, who represented the East Enders in the annual Cup Match classic between 1971 and 1993, has officially severed ties with nearby Bailey’s Bay whose ranks have been depleted by the off-season transfers of several leading cast members.

And Bay’s loss could turn out to be St.George’s’ gain as Gibbons’ wealth of cricket knowledge and experience will be a welcome asset at Wellington Oval.

“Our intent is to fill our cricket programme with the best possible coaches available,” St.George’s’ sports chairman Kenny Foggo said.

In addition to working at the grassroots level, Gibbons will assist the club at the senior level and work directly under head coach and former Eastern Counties rival George Cannonier.

The Cup Match champions have also secured the services of former club skipper and son of the soil Clay Smith who was appointed Under-13 coach, while another former skipper, Gregg Foggo, and returning seamer Ryan Steede have been put in charge of St.George’s’ Under-10 team.

“With these coaches committed to our programme I feel that our young players can now receive some of the best coaching,” Foggo added.
