Hot-shot Sims fires brilliant 66

Bermuda touring golf pro Michael Sims engineered a stunning recovery to make another cut on the Nationwide Tour yesterday, firing a brilliant round of 66 which included an incredible seven birdies.

After shooting an even par round of 71 in the opening round of the $650,000 Cox Classic at the Champions Run course in Omaha, Nebraska on Thursday on a day when the majority of the field went under par on the 7,145-yard lay-out, Sims was languishing in 110th place in the field of 150.

Last night he had moved into a tie for 45th.

After bogeying two of his first three holes in the second round yesterday, the Bermudian plummeted even further out of contention.

But he then launched what turned into an amazing recovery.

He birdied the par-four fourth, par-four fifth, par-five fifth and the par-four sixth to take his overall score from two over par to two under.

With the cut already set at four-under on a course which most players found as accommodating as any they've played on the tour this year, Sims then grabbed another birdie at the par-four tenth.

After making par at 11 and 12, he then needed just one more birdie in his last six holes in order to secure his place in the weekend field ¿ and he got it at the par four 13th.

Then just to make absolutely sure he added another at the par-five 17th before parring the last for a five-under total of 66.

Thursday had proved a much different story as Sims mixed six birdies with three bogeys and a disastrous triple bogey seven at the fourth ¿ a hole on which he made birdie yesterday.

The Belmont Hills pro currently stands at 103rd on the Nationwide Tour money list, but now has the chance to improve on that ranking this weekend.
