Dangerous Wellington Road cliff face a ‘challenge’ but will be repaired W&E Minister
A damaged wall in St George’s poses a “significant technical challenge” according to Public Works staff, but Government is seeking a permanent solution.Public Works Minister Michael Weeks said yesterday that a barrier was been placed in front of the wall on Wellington Road, which partially collapsed onto a motorist more than a year ago, as an interim measure.A Ministry spokesman said: “Engineers within the Ministry have concluded that repairs to the wall present a significant technical challenge due to the nature of the loose material towards the top of the rock face, along with the challenge of accessibility and the use of equipment at such a high elevation.“As such, traditional methods of repairs, which normally involve patching small pockets of the wall in specific locations, would not be sufficient.“The Ministry is currently pursuing a more comprehensive method of repair, which requires specialised equipment currently not available on Island to affect a long-term solution for the problem that could also be used for similar erosion scenarios elsewhere on the Island, should they arise.”On July 20 last year, a section of the rock face collapsed onto the road after heavy rain.Marvin Iris, a 32-year-old St George’s resident, was riding down the road on his motorcycle when the wall collapsed. As a result, he lost control of the vehicle and suffered injuries to his back.Following the collapse, then-Public Works Minister Derrick Burgess said emergency repairs would be a priority.Mr Weeks said that both he and his technical officers met with Mr Iris earlier this year to say that the Ministry will be addressing the matter in the safest way possible. In the meanwhile, however, the Minister asked the public to continue to use caution when travelling down the road.“While repairs could have been undertaken using existing methods, the results would have been short term thereby not ensuring the future safety of the road way.“Not only do we have to consider the repairs to the wall and the safety of the motorist travelling along this road, but also the safety of our employees undertaking the work.”“We completely understand the concerns of the residents regarding the current condition of the wall. However, we want to ensure that the work we do is done right the first time.”
