We must embrace this fantastic opportunity

Benefits beyond belief: people of all colours should embrace this event, do their very best to be Bermudian — united in making this event the best it has ever been

Dear Sir,I am a sailor and, of course, have an interest in sailing. To have an event such as the America’s Cup come to our island for the first time ever, outside of the country that won it, is just plainly incredible.Recently, there has been voiced that there will be disruption of services to this event if certain things do not change. These things have nothing to do with the America’s Cup.People of all colours should embrace this event, do their very best to be Bermudian — united in making this event the best it has ever been. The principal people involved in the America’s Cup do not give a damn about us; they just want to have a great event. But the benefits that we get for being efficient, nice and trustworthy are beyond belief.I do not think any of us have any idea what is to come, but so far the television coverage worldwide, the magazine coverage worldwide and the social-media coverage worldwide have taken us from an island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean to an incredibly recognised international sailing venue with loads of sail racing events that have already happened. And possibly many more in the works that have not even been thought of.Already houses and rental units have been taken, hotels will be full, construction for this event has produced many jobs, many young sailors have been trained, the teams have done great work around the island painting, fixing boats and helping where they can, just to name a few things.Get this event right, Bermuda, and we all win: the sailing world will look at us with envy and more and more events — helping our tourist industry, renting our properties, filling our restaurants — will be here for ever.If the America’s Cup goes wrong, it will be an embarrassment to the entire country, not just some. It would dissuade future investments to the island and tourism would suffer. This would come at a cost to all of us and we would not be “proud to be Bermudian”.No one wants to dump tons of money into an unstable situation, so put politics, unions, immigration aside and focus on making this the best America’s Cup the world has ever seen.Get involved any way you can; the opportunities are there. Good luck to us all, Bermuda.
