Special facility for teens opens at MAWI
A new facility for young people with mental health difficulties is today throwing its doors open to the public.
The Child and Adolescent Services department at the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute, which opened this month, treats up to ten students at a time in its day programme.
It also boasts a four-bed inpatient unit for those who need in-hospital care, and is staffed by trained educators.
The 5,000-square foot property includes a private landscaped area with a basketball court and two courtyards, with planted terraces and play equipment.
The new 19-member team includes a psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, clinical assistant, registered nurse and clinical co-ordinator, as well as family, occupational, experiential and educational therapists.
It was set up after MAWI staff recognised services for young people needed to be expanded.
Child and Adolescent Services programme manager Sharon Apopa said: "Our new facility offers comprehensive services for young people in a state-of-the-art, first class property.
"We invite members of the public to attend our open house, take a tour, ask questions and see for themselves what we have to offer.
"Our staff members are delighted to be working in this pleasant and professional environment.
"CAS serves the mental health needs of young people in the community and our team is proud to offer quality care in such a fine facility."
The open house event takes place today from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
