Motorbike passenger in ICU after accident

A young motorbike passenger was last night fighting for his life in hospital following an horrific late-night road crash.

The 23-year-old Sandys man suffered serious head injuries when the vehicle collided with a car in Mangrove Bay Road, Sandys, on Thursday, at 11.25 p.m.

He was taken to the Intensive Care Unit of King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, where his condition was last night described as poor.

The motorbike driver, a 21-year-old St. George's woman, sustained injuries to her right arm and left leg in the smash. She was also taken to KEMH before being released. The driver of the car, an 18-year-old Sandys man, was not injured.

Police say the teenager was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving and taken to Hamilton Police Station, but he passed an alco-analyser test and was released.

Officers say the accident happened near to the road's junction with East Shore Road, as the car was exiting the Somerset Country Squire.

The car received extensive front end damage, while the motorbike was also seriously damaged. A car parked in a bus lay-by on the north side of Mangrove Bay Road was also damaged.

Traffic was diverted away from the area for about an hour as Police launched their investigation into the incident.

Witnesses should telephone P.c. Melesia Iris at Somerset Police Station on 234-1010.
