TWO down and two to go. And seemingly everyone in Bermuda is waiting on new father Tiger Woods to win one of the four majors which would see him star in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf set to be staged in Bermuda for the first time in October at the Mid Ocean Club.

Both Premier Ewart Brown and Sports Minister Randy Horton, along with Opposition Leader Michael Dunkley, were pulling for Woods to win the US Open last weekend at the incredibly tough Oakmont layout in Pennsylvania.

But instead it was Argentina’s Angel Cabrera who held off Woods to come away with the prestigious trophy.

“Tiger was close though,” said Mr. Horton this week. “But it is still great — Cabrera deserved to win. Now we have two guys who are there but obviously everyone wants Tiger — when Tiger Woods comes then the world comes.”

Dr. Brown said earlier this week: “It’s no secret that I was pulling for Tiger Woods at the Masters and I was pulling for him again at the US Open. So I am a little disappointed.”

Now they will all be closely watching how things turn out at the upcoming British Open and the final major of the year, the PGA Championship.

The British Open starts on July 19 and the PGA Championship begins on August 9 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa.

The PGA Grand Slam of Golf pits the winners of the four majors against each other over 36 holes and Bermuda won the right to host the event this year at the Mid Ocean Club on October 16 and 17.

David Ezekiel, the Mid Ocean Club’s vice-president, has said that everyone hopes Woods makes it to the island in October.

“I guess everyone is hoping to see Tiger but we are not pinning the success of the tournament on Tiger.” he said before the US Open.

Cabrera now joins American Zach Johnson in the Grand Slam of Golf — Johnson won the Masters earlier this year.

It was the first major victory for both players. Woods came second in both tournaments.

Less than 24 hours after Woods finished second at the US Open on Sunday, his wife gave birth to their first child, a daughter — Sam Alexis Woods.

Woods had earlier said he would miss a major if it meant seeing the birth of his child.

Now he won’t have to, but it’s not clear how his upcoming schedule will be affected.

The last Grand Slam of Golf — the 24th edition — was staged at the Poipu Bay Golf Course and Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa in Hawaii.

Woods won the tournament for a record seventh time.

Hawaii has hosted the event for the past 12 years and PGA of America president Brian Whitcomb said when Bermuda was awarded the tournament: “The PGA Grand Slam of Golf marks a new chapter in its history by visiting the beautiful island of Bermuda, which is no stranger to hosting the finest players in the game.”

The Mid Ocean Club has hosted such heads of state as Presidents George H.W. Bush and Dwight Eisenhower, Winston Churchill, the Duke of Windsor, as well as baseball icon Babe Ruth.
