The silent killer

June 9, 2007

Dear Sir,

Who wins? Who loses? Do you still remember the day when both of you said “ I DO’s”, “ For better and for worse”, this was the promise that had said and undone. Marriage is becoming valueless and worthless because of divorce, a family that supposed to guide, teach, and take care of the child/children with the proper values and importance of life are now being eradicate by the social illness of divorce. I consider divorce as a silent killer, a murderer, that slowly killing the love, respect and trust of the members of the family, and unfortunately, it is the children who have been the victims, they are caught in the middle of the fighting parents, and children are completely damaged by the tragic environment cause by divorce that lead the way for children to changes their attitudes because of the fights, struggles that they have seen from the parents to win them. Children who have been affected by divorce are usually have lower self esteem, are weak, isolated, are into drugs, early pregnancy; these are some of the serious situation that children are ended up to.

It is usually the fathers who ended up homeless, with debt, and had lost their children affection. We don’t need to be selfish; we should have remember that we cannot bear the child/children on our own if we don’t have men on our side, that is why we became parents, that is bonded by marriage, and so they as fathers have right to our children. And I strongly believe that shared parenting will do best for the children as it offers the children to have an equal opportunity to build up and maintain meaningful relationship with both parents. Parents should start thinking of their children and not only for themselves, not on how to win the children custody, not on how to hurt their former spouse by the means of their children, not on how to gain half of the assets/property of the former spouse, but on how we should be able to give to our children what is best for them, so they will become a good person, and responsible citizen.

End the divisive rhetoric

June 25, 2007

Dear Sir,

Today’s press release by Glenn Jones following the ruling by the Court of Appeal demonstrates the length that Dr. Brown and the PLP will go to try and divert the public’s attention away from the Court of Appeal judgment. By insinuating that the Leader of the Opposition, Michael Dunkley, was involved in drug importation and by saying that the “recent court judgments” would allow “Bermuda’s long standing supremacist oligarchy — to intensify the ongoing UBP/media tyranny” Dr. Brown manages to not only try and impugn the integrity of Michael Dunkley but he seems to criticise the very legal system upon which he now seeks to use to sue for libel and appears to call into question the impartiality of the Bermuda courts and rule of law. How absolutely insane!

Mr. Editor. I am becoming increasingly concerned about Dr. Brown’s state of mind when he uses such inflammatory language, particularly without producing a shed of evidence to support his false conclusions. It is my understanding two people were arrested in connection with the leaked files that were/are PLP supporters with the Son of the Soil himself saying he was a PLP supporter. Mr. Editor, if Dr. Brown is not “overly concerned with protecting the information relating” to him then he should instruct the Attorney General to stop wasting the taxpayers money and allow “all Bermuda’s innocent citizens” to decide for themselves as to the voracity of the police files.

What is even more concerning is that I doubt the press release was something drafted in haste. I say this since the phrase that the publication of so-called “stolen” police files “was conceived and executed by perpetrators as a public lynching of prominent targets in the current and past PLP administrations” is clearly designed to make the reader think of the abhorrent and unforgivable practice of lynching blacks in the Southern United States. Dr. Brown’s provocative use of language and reference to historical injustices in this way is a total disgrace and is hardly a way in which to positively encourage the “Big Conversation.” Mr. Editor, this divisive rhetoric, seemingly supported by the entire PLP Government, must stop. Now.

Respect is earned

June 8, 2007

Dear Sir,

I was most disgusted by the comments made by PLP spokesman Rolfe Commissiong during the ZBM Evening News broadcast on Wednesday June 6. He mentioned how disappointed he was at the lack of turnout of whites at the funeral of Dame Lois Browne Evans. He continued to further vent his anti-white propaganda by insisting that whites failed to attend due to it being an event dominated by black people. What disturbs me even more Mr. Editor, is that only one day after the funeral, Mr. Commissiong has the audacity to raise this complaint particularly as he was one of the most outspoken against the UBP when they released their TV broadcast the day after Dame Lois’ passing. What a bunch of hypocrites! Has he no respect for Dame Lois Browne Evans?

Here we are reflecting on the passing of a remarkable woman, who persevered through more difficult times than you could imagine. Her list of achievements and accomplishments dwarfs anything Mr. Commissiong has accomplished and ever will. Did he not attend the funeral and listen to the outpouring of respect the people of Bermuda had for Dame Lois Browne Evans? Give it a rest already!

One would have thought Mr. Commissiong would have shown some respect and honour to Dame Lois in this time of mourning by waiting a few days before continuing with his “racial tirade against white people and the UBP”. Why must he always bring race into the issue? His comments are nothing more than his usual political waffle in an attempt to cause more racial unrest. Respect is earned. Dame Lois could have shown him a thing or two.

RIP
