A woman was trapped in a car and injured when the vehicle crashed through a fence along North Shore Road in Smith’s at about 6.30pm on Friday.

Police said the driver was headed east near Jennings Road at the approach to Flatts when she apparently lost control and went over the embankment.

Members of the public extracted her from the vehicle before the arrival of police, who said she was treated at the scene by EMTs and taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Traffic was diverted while the scene was processed for just over an hour, with westbound traffic sent over Flatts Hill and eastbound traffic over Store Hill.

The crash occurred near Police Beach by Gibbet Island, where images shared online showed a section of fencing broken and a car on its side in roadside vegetation.
