The electricity supplier, which is replacing ageing cables along South Road and Middle Road from Paget to Warwick to upgrade its power transmission system, said workers would not pass through the Paget traffic lights until after the first weekend in August.

The work involves using a moving set of traffic lights which are progressing along South Road towards Middle Road and causing tailbacks.

Southlands ‘happening’ today

A “happening” outside the Southlands estate on South Road, Warwick, was scheduled to take place earlier this morning as opponents of a proposal to build a hotel on the wilderness area gathered for what was being advertised as a “meeting.”

With growing speculation that a Special Development Order is about to be granted for the proposed Jumeriah Southlands Hotel scheme, members of the BEST group intended to raise the profile of the issue and put pressure on Government by gathering near to the entrance of the Southlands estate between 7 a.m. and 8.30 a.m. today.

The exact nature of today’s protest was unclear last night, with organisers merely referring to it as a “meeting” of all those opposed to the hotel development, however, they emphasised there would be no disruption to traffic and no illegal activity.
