Steam Academy to host circus-themed educational programme

Public school students will design their own circus games at an educational programme this summer.

The initiative, run by the Department of Education’s Steam Academy, will take place in Dellwood Middle School’s tech building from July 3 to 28.

Students aged 9 to 12 can apply to be in the programme, which will have a circus theme.

Neville Zuill, the academy’s lead teacher, said: “P4 to M1 students will have the opportunity to design and build their very own circus games using a wide array of exciting tools and technologies, such as woodwork, circuitry, 3D printing, laser engraving and more.”

Steam is STEM — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — plus art.

Diallo Rabain, the Minister of Education, hopes the programme will spark children’s imaginations while teaching them science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics skills.“

He said: “With a focus on experiential learning, Steam Academy provides a unique opportunity for students to delve into captivating STEM and trades professions activities.

“Participating in this immersive experience will give them valuable insights into their potential career paths.

“Steam Academy serves as a stepping stone for our young learners to consider the possibility of pursuing a signature learning programme in high school, opening doors to exciting futures and endless possibilities.”

The academy will accept the first 22 public school students who apply to the programme. It will cost $130 a week and be held between 9am and 4pm.
