Legislation that will enshrine the National Heroes Day criteria and selection process into law is under way, senators heard.

Owen Darrell, the Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport, said during this morning’s Senate sitting: “This process is under way, with the Department of Culture concluding jurisdictional review.”

Mr Darrell, who is also the Government Leader in the Senate, gave a brief statement on this year’s event as well as progress made last year to improve it going forward.

“June is the month when we honour our national heroes — those who have given extraordinary contributions resulting in the betterment of our country and citizenry.

“The bestowing of National Heroes designation is the highest honour bequeathed by the Government of Bermuda. For this reason it is not just a high honour, it is also a rare honour.

“Last year, the Government made the decision to further underscore the importance of this designation by initiating the nomination process only once every ten years rather than on an annual basis.

“Each year the Department of Culture encourages the public to become more knowledgeable about our heroes through an educational campaign as well as a tribute event.”

He said that last year, the department celebrated the occasion by moving the Premier’s Concert to June for the first time.

The concert highlights the talents of young creatives as well as grant recipients in the visual and performing arts.

This year’s concert will be held on June 25 and is open to the public, although space is limited. Registration is available online at www.culture.bm.

Speaking of Bermuda’s past and present national heroes, Mr Darrell added: “Although thanks to our educational campaign you will undoubtedly be reminded throughout the month of June of their many accomplishments, it is my hope that these celebrations, including the holiday on Monday, June 19, will provide an opportunity to reflect upon their contributions to our society.”
