Canjelea's Dream night

Crowned:</B. Canjelea Taylor, 16, was named the winner of the Miss Hal Jackson Talented Teen Scholarship 2007.

Sixteen-year-old Canjelea Taylor was crowned Miss Hal Jackson Talented Teen Scholarship winner 2007 at City Hall on Saturday.

A standing-room-only crowd at City Hall was mesmerised by the youthful signer who represented her school, Bermuda High School for Girls, marking the second time in two years that a student from BHS has won. The 2006 winner was Kharis Brooks.

The queen's reigning court consists of other Talented Teens who ranged in age from 15 to 17 years of age.

They include first runner-up Kandace Furbert, 15, of Berkeley Institute, who is a singer and Tanaya Tucker, 16, of Warwick Academy, who is a dancer and pianist.

The competition, which had the theme, 'Dream Girls', featured a dazzling dance production number.

During the competition, a number of other scholarships and prizes were given to several of the contestants, including a leadership scholarship to Tanaya Tucker to attend an overseas leadership camp in the US.

Tanaya received another scholarship as the contestant with the highest Grade Point Average. Jasmine Wilson, of Bermuda Institute received a prize for Most Improved.

Judges for the evening were Gita Blankeney-Saltus, Darlene Ming, Natasha Outerbridge, Lorrita Tucker and Abimbola Bademosi.

The event was sponsored by the ladies of Sigma Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and pictures by Scott Pacheco.
