Guilty of assault
A woman who left her victim needing 22 stitches in her face was found guilty of assault yesterday.
Wendy Margaret Harvey, of Northchurch Lane, Hamilton Parish was found unanimously guilty of wounding Gene-Anne Bean with intent to do grievous bodily harm and guilty of wounding Gloria Maria Hayward-Cox with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
The court heard during the trial that Harvey caused facial wounds to Ms Bean with a broken bottle outside of the Hamilton Parish Workmen’s Club on July 11, 2005.
Ms Bean took the stand for the prosecution telling the court the melee began when Harvey came into the club. She was banned from an incident in 1997.
She explained a drunk Harvey had tried to enter the club several times. Ms Bean said she escorted her out each time but got annoyed.
She said by 11 p.m. she had had enough and told Harvey to “get the f*** out”.
She said she gripped Harvey’s shirt and took her outside. However, she said, Harvey told her “she was going to f**k me up” and then got a Heineken bottle from the trash and broke it.
Ms Bean said Harvey raised the bottle, began waving it in the air and swung hitting her on her forehead and the bridge of her nose. The witness told the court she went running towards Harvey with a crash helmet in her hand but was stopped by a concerned club member who did not want her to get into trouble.
She said that when she got to the hospital, she received 22 stitches to her face and eight to an arm wound.
The court also heard from Ms Cox that Harvey attacked her causing wounds to her shoulder and back requiring nine staples.
She told the court she ran outside when a friend came running into the bar screaming ‘Gene-Anne, Gene-Anne’. I asked her what’s wrong with Gene-Anne.
Ms Cox said she got up, went outside and saw Ms Bean with blood streaming down her face
Ms Cox said Harvey began hitting her and she punched her a few times in self-defence.
Harvey’s story was drastically different. She maintained she was never in the club that night.
The defendant said she stood at the door to get a beer when Ms Bean came and tried to take it from her when a struggle began. She denied raising the bottle and hitting Ms Bean. Harvey said Ms Bean came to attack her with a helmet and she raised her hands to fend her off, unknowingly cutting her with the bottle neck that was stuck on her finger.
She also said Ms Cox came and attacked her and she responded in self-defence.
Harvey was remanded in custody until her sentencing on Wednesday.
