Island's ferries a hot topic at overseas territories meeting
Bermuda's fast ferries were the topic of interest on the last day of the Overseas Territories Consultative Council Meeting yesterday.
Premier Dr. Ewart Brown led the presentation for Kurt Tibbetts of the Cayman Islands, Dr. Orlando Smith of the British Virgin Islands, and Osbourne Fleming of Anguilla on Bermuda's fast ferries at the meeting in Grand Cayman.
And yesterday the Premier said the presentation and idea behind the fast ferries was overwhelmingly well received by the Government heads.
"This further cements Bermuda's growing international reputation for excellence in the area of water transport," he said.
"Our neighbours in the Caribbean will require larger vessels, but the principals upon which our ferry project was developed are applicable and are being warmly received at every turn."
How the fast ferry scheme was developed successfully in Bermuda and how it could be applied in their countries, were topics raised by those attending the meeting.
The four Government heads have all convened in Grand Cayman to hold talks relevant to their respective nations before meeting with the full OTCC in London later this year.
Also covered yesterday were also potential healthcare linkages for the Overseas Territories as the Premier shared the success of Bermuda's affiliations with medial institutions like the Lahey Clinic in Massachusetts and Johns Hopkins in Maryland.
Several other items of mutual interest discussed included the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, solid waste management and the sharing of forensic facilities for criminal investigations.
On Tuesday the leaders had discussed tax legislation in the United States and its effect on the Overseas Territories. A shared witness protection programme and effective policing were also deliberated.
