All aboard . . . for Charles' 18th Sunset Jazz Cruise
Charles Bascome, the musician who organises the event, admitted that even he did not anticipate its success.
“It started after I lived for some time in Boston, where I attended Berklee School of Music. They had a jazz cruise every Sunday. But there was nothing like that in Bermuda and I thought it would be nice have something like that here.”
Mr. Bascome
“I remember when we first started we just served hors d’oeuvres, but we realised that for more tourists to come we would have to serve dinner too.
“There is a great mix of both locals and visitors, which is great because it gives tourists a chance to mingle with locals and try local dishes.”
This year entertainment will be provided by local jazz quartet Jazz4, featuring John Lee, Dennis Fox, Aundy Simons and Lionel Edwards with Derick (CJ) Symonds as emcee.
Although the jazz following in Bermuda is not particularly large, Mr. Bascome credited a faithful group of jazz fans with keeping the event afloat.
“We hold two events a year — this one and An Evening of Jazz<$>, when we bring international musicians down for a concert. We use the revenue from both of them to fund the Charles Bascome Music Scholarship.”
Although its aims are altruistic, Mr. Bascome promised an enjoyable evening for all.
“It is a fun thing — there will be a door prize as well as dinner. It’s just a nice, enjoyable evening. If you like jazz or just want to watch the sunset, all are welcome.”
