Young golfers US-bound

Two of Bermuda’s most promising young golfers head off to the Callaway Junior World Championships in San Diego, California this week.

Seventeen-year-olds Nick Jones and Cornell Bean jr, sons of two of the Island’s professional golfers — Eardley Jones and Cornell Bean — have been sel- ected to compete in the 15-17 age division.

And they’ll face stiff competition from players around the world, particularly from those in the host country where competitors have to qualify from a series of tournaments.

Play takes place on the Torrey Pines South course which is par 72 and 7,227 yards in length from the blue tees. The ocean side lay-out will be the site of the US Open in 2008. The opening ceremony and parade of state and international flags takes place this Sunday with the first round of competition next Tuesday. The field in the 15-17 division will be cut to the top 50 players after 54 holes before the final round on Friday, July 20.

Last year Bermuda’s two representatives, Nick Jones and Blair Marshall, failed to make the cut.

The Junior Worlds were founded in 1968 and have grown steadily since with this year’s total field in all age groups exceeding 1,000 golfers from 73 countries.

Previous winners include Ernie Els, Phil Mickleson, Nick Price and Tiger Woods.
