'I want to be judged by my conscious actions'

The Premier asked to be judged on his "conscious actions" last night. In a speech given to Warwick voters Dr. Ewart Brown appeared to address an article in the Mid Ocean which contained allegations of corruption at the Bermuda Housing Corporation and alleged that he had been investigated by the fraud squad officers, along with a handful of other Government MPs.

Progressive Labour Party supporters have claimed that the Police dossier containing the allegations was leaked by the Opposition or Opposition supporters though the United Bermuda Party has denied any involvement in the leak.

Last night Dr. Brown said: "I am happy to see that Bermudians are as smart or smarter than some people think, that you are able to decide for yourself if someone is working for you or against you and I will always leave that decision up to you.

"I want to be judged by my conscious actions and not by those people who believe that if you kill the head you will kill the body."

Dr. Brown told the packed St. Mary's Church Hall that his Government had worked hard to improve Bermuda and that the revival of tourism was already well underway.

But he added that until additional beds were brought to Bermuda, through the construction of luxury hotels, the forward momentum would be stalled, explaining that no matter how many flights came to the Island once the 6,000 beds currently available were filled additional air tourists could not be accommodated.

And he repeated his view that a cruise visitor who are known to spend less than air visitors was better than no visitor. He also urged people to support the tourism industry and get involved in it through training which will be provided at a new hospitality facility and through programmes that will be in all of the proposed new hotel developments.

Though an election has not been called the meeting last night saw Warwick PLP MP's explain what they have been up to since the last election and state what they hoped to do if re-elected.

Former Premier Alex Scott told voters he had the experience to handle their affairs and now that he no longer ran the country he had more time to deal with their concerns. Meanwhile Social Rehabilitation Minister Dale Butler told the voters of the many things he has done in his current ministry and his former role as Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs and Sports.

In particular he pointed out the success of Mirrors, a residential programme aimed to help troubled teens, which already has 300 volunteers and will admit students in Fall.

MP George Scott also pledged to deal with traffic woes in the area if re-elected
