Contest claim trophy for fifth straight year

Contest collected the Heritage Trophy for the fifth straight year as the fitted dinghy season continued in St. George's Harbour on Sunday.

In a make-up day for racing that was postponed on May 24, Contest was looking to defend the cup which is traditionally raced for in the season opener.

And in a blustery southerly breeze, she sailed past her closest rival, Challenger, whose crew chose not to hoist a spinnaker, after both Elizabeth and Victory had suffered problems.

Victory's first tack was into waves and they had to stop and bail while Elizabeth suffered a broken halyard half-way up the first beat.

Victory's luck changed, however, during the second race for the Anniversary Cup when the wind dropped.

With the breeze down, some boats threw crew overboard over the length of the race as the four boats all stayed close.

But at the finish it was Victory that took the win followed by Elizabeth with Contest third and Challenger fourth.

The final race of the day for the Leon D. Fox Cup saw the breeze blowing at a steady 12 to 15 knots with Contest moving into an early lead, followed by Victory and Elizabeth. Challenger had problems with the boom and was forced to drop back to make repairs.

At the first top mark it was Contest out in front with Victory in second closely followed by Elizabeth. The first leeward mark saw the same order while Challenger took on a lot of water during their rounding, forcing them to stop and bail.

Contest held onto her lead to claim first while Elizabeth and Victory were locked in a battle for second with Elizabeth getting the better of the deal on the final windward leg to claim second place.

With eight races remaining, Contest have extended their lead in the overall points standings for the Coronation Cup.

Contest have 50, Victory 38.75 while Challenger and Elizabeth are tied with 29.50.

The next race day is August 12 in Mangrove Bay.
