Tim Marshall will run as an independent

Lawyer Tim Marshall is to run as an independent in Sandys South where he will take on incumbent Terry Lister, who comfortably held the seat for the PLP last time, and UBP candidate Alvin Wilson.

Mr. Marshall said: "I believe that party politics in Bermuda today has done more harm than good and has served only to divide us as a people."

Mr. Marshall, who lives in the seat, called for open Government after hitting out at "any form of political corruption, favouritism, kickbacks, back-room deals, secret government contracts and any other behaviour by any member of Parliament or Government that shatters the expectations and trust of honest, hard working Bermudians".

Mr. Marshall said the Attorney General's Chambers, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Police Service and the Auditor General's Chambers are truly independent bodies whose mission is to serve the people and not politicians.

"I have heard some people say "well the other guys got away with it for years and it is now our turn". I don't think that is the type of society we want, where we turn a blind eye to what we know is morally wrong.

"If elected, I will push for laws and practices which make all politicians and Ministers accountable; protect individuals that bring corrupt or unethical practices to light; give Bermudians meaningful access to the workings of government; and make government departments responsive to the people."

He also called for a Civil Rights Act to allow any person to go to court and assert that legislation or a government policy is unconstitutional or contrary to the Human Rights Act.

With education he proposes a three choice system an academic senior programme where the ultimate objective is to pursue a university degree; a commercial senior programme where the objective is to pursue a business-oriented career that does not necessarily require a university degree; and a technical school programme where the objective is to become certified in a good paying trade.
