Jones stars for U-19s
Bermuda Under-19s 200-9;
Exxon Academy 139
A sumptuous 81 from all-rounder Malachi Jones set the stage for a convincing 61-run victory for Bermuda’s Under-19s at the Sir Gary Sobers International Schools tournament in Barbados yesterday.
Their win over the Guyanese Exxon Academy means Rodney Trott’s men have now played six, won three and lost three during their time in the Caribbean — with two more matches left to go tomorrow and on Monday.
Trott won his second toss of the tour yesterday morning and unsurprisingly elected to bat at the Content Ground in St. Phillips.
After being in a spot of bother at 23 for two, with both openers Terryn Fray (14) and Maurico Basset (0) back in the hutch, Trott (22) and Jones then added 83 for the third wicket to improve the situation. And once the captain was dismissed, an increasingly assertive Jones then added an additional 63 along with Khiry Furbert — before the World Cup star became one of five lbw victims of the day to perish 19 short of a deserved century.
Trying to the force the pace in the latter stages, Bermuda’s low
But against a side who had not reached 200 in tournament so far, that total was always likely to prove sufficient — with off-spinner Tamari Tucker (four for 18), Trott (three for 22) and Lamar Richardson (two for 24) proving too hot for the opposition to handle.
After a day’s rest, Bermuda will take on Curacao tomorrow — one of the smaller teams in the competition who they are expected to beat handily.
