Rest is the best cure for Duffy
A more varied diet and plenty of post-race pampering are the proscribed cures for Flora Duffy’s recent form slump.
Blood tests conducted last week on the 19-year-old triathlon sensation revealed nothing of any major medical significance — though she’s been told to increase her iron intake and look after her body better in recovery.
The news that she is otherwise in fine fettle came as a great relief to the young talent, ranked the 19th female triathlete in the world, who has been horribly out of sorts in her last two World Cup races in Madrid and Des Moines, Iowa respectively.
After failing to finish the race in the Spanish capital and then coming in third from last in America, a clearly distraught Duffy said she simply didn’t have the energy or “the spark” she felt in the early part of the season and subsequently decided to seek medical advice.
“It is a relief — I feel a lot more confident in myself now and hopefully I’ll be back to somewhere near my best quite soon,” she said. “I’ve been told that my iron intake is not good enough and that I’ve got to take more in generally immediately after training or racing because at the moment my body is not recovering quick enough.
“Iron’s really important because it helps with the production of haemoglobin, which is what helps to oxygenate the blood and the muscles to recover quicker.
“I’ve also been told I need to look after myself a bit better in between races: stretching a lot more, having more massages and icing as much as possible, things like that.
“But being at home for the past two weeks has really helped. I’m feeling a lot stronger in training at the moment.”
Duffy now has a intense week of training ahead of her on the Island before flying off to Brazil on July 8 for the Pan Am Games — at which she will be the Island’s major medal hope.
