Seas the day!
Today is 'World Ocean Day', when educational institutions in many countries, including the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo (BAMZ) celebrate the world's oceans. The day is also an educational opportunity for the public to think and learn more about the importance of oceans to life on planet Earth.
For example:
* Oceans generate most of the world's oxygen and provide us with food, recreation, transportation, and inspiration.
* Oceans were once abundant and clean; now many of the world's fisheries are in decline.
* Coastal pollution is affecting essential habitats and causing many species to disappear at an alarming rate.
* Climate change and pollution are threatening coral ecosystems worldwide.
In Bermuda, the BAMZ offers guests a chance to learn more about our local ocean environment on a daily basis through exhibits at the Aquarium, which allow the public to observe the many species of animals living in our waters.
"World Ocean Day reminds us of the ocean's importance and the need to protect and conserve its precious ecosystems," a BAMZ spokesperson said. "It is up to each of us to help ensure that our oceans are protected and conserved. The legacy of the Atlantic Ocean is one we must protect for future generations of Bermudians."
