Former Progressive Labour Party Leader Dame Lois Browne Evans was "critically" ill in hospital last night.

Dame Lois (pictured), believed to be a few days short of her 80th birthday, was taken to the emergency department at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

A Government spokesman said: "She is in a critical condition, although at this stage I don't know the cause of her sickness."
