Nahki Wells says helping Bermuda secure their top-flight status in the Concacaf Nations League would feel like “winning the World Cup” as they look to pull off a mammoth upset against Mexico tomorrow.Bermuda, second in group B behind Panama on goal difference, will be the overwhelming underdogs against Mexico, who won the Gold Cup last summer and are ranked twelfth in the Fifa world rankings.Mexico have travelled to Bermuda with a star-studded squad, including Napoli winger Hirving Lozano, Atlético Madrid midfielder Héctor Herrera and Porto forward Jesús Corona, and will expect nothing less than a comfortable win in their group opener.However, despite the odds being heavily stacked against 167th-ranked Bermuda, Wells believes they are capable of making life difficult for the Mexicans should they underestimate their opponents.“We all know a win can solidify us in League A, which will be like winning a World Cup for Bermuda,” Wells said.“[A win] is certainly not expected, but you never know in football. A lot will depend on how they approach the fixture. “It could be up there with the biggest shocks in Bermuda footballing history. If we could do it, it would only show how far Bermuda football has come.”Bermuda have shown to be made of sterner stuff since coach Kyle Lightbourne took the reins, suffering narrow defeats against Haiti and Costa Rica before beating Nicaragua at the Gold Cup.They further enhanced their reputation within the region by pulling off a shock 2-0 victory away to Panama in the Nations League last month to avenge a 4-1 defeat three days earlier. The top two teams in group B will secure their League A status, as well as gaining automatic qualification for the 2021 Gold Cup, while the winner will advance to the semi-finals of the Nations League.“We’ve got nothing to lose,” Wells added. “Hopefully, we can put on a better display than we did against Panama at home and see where that takes us.”Wells is enjoying a rich vein of form, having scored five goals in as many games for Sky Bet Championship side Queens Park Rangers since sinking Panama with a double salvo last month. “I’m going into the biggest game for our country in however many years and I’m in a good place,” he said. “I’ve been scoring goals for QPR and I’ll just take everything I can from the environment [in England] with me and do everything I can to make a difference.”
