Former athletes to receive magazine awards

Former top referee and BFA president Charlie Marshall

Kenny Paul, the former St George’s Cup Match bowler, who died at the weekend, is one of the 68 former athletes set to be honoured at The Sport Bermuda Magazine Awards ceremony next month.

The list was confirmed this week with the recipients, representing 30 sports, to be recognised for their outstanding accomplishments at the gala event at Ruth Seaton James Auditorium on Saturday, November 24.

In addition, there will be four major awards, with Cal “Bummy” Symonds, the St George’s Cup Match captain in the 1960s, the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Dudley Eve Sports Administration Award will go to Donald Dane, the former Devonshire Colts coach and later the Bermuda Football Association president.

Charles Marshall, another former BFA president and longtime referee, will receive the WF “Chummy” Hayward award and former triathlete Jim Butterfield the Humantarian award.

“We simply wish to award those that have made impactful and valuable contributions to Bermuda via sport and sporting talent and commitment to raising the standard of their particular discipline or disciplines in many cases,” said Mark Jennings, the creator and author of Sport Bermuda Magazine.

“There are so many individuals that have benefited and in turn returned the blessing to the game of their favour and even beyond, and we simply want to mark the many contributors to this wonderful thing called sport.”

The event is the brainchild of Jennings who, until recently, was the host of the popular Sports Zone talk show on Magic 102.7.

The ceremony will serve as a preamble to the re-launch of the Sport Bermuda Magazine in January following a hiatus as Jennings pursued overseas roles at ESPN in radio, as well as later becoming director of the Arsenal Football Club Academy in Augusta, Georgia.

A few years ago he helped introduce the Sports Zone show, acting as host before leaving to devote more time to the awards show and the re-launch of the magazine. It is hoped the awards show will become an annual event.

Other local athletes to be honoured include triple jumper Brian Wellman, Winston Jones, coach of the Big Blue Machine softball team; boxers Clarence Hill, who won the bronze medal at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, and Troy Darrell; Leroy “Tubby” Richardson, the former St Georoge’s Cup Match captain and the oldest surviving former Cup Match player and Ed Sherlock and Debbie Butterfield in road running.

The awards show will start at 6.30pm and be co-hosted by comedian Earlwin “Bootsie” Wolffe and retired sportscaster Joe L Brown.

Also featured will be musical acts including Olivia Hamilton, the former Bermuda Idol winner and singer/songstress, as well as The Brothers, formerly known as The Euphonics.

Tickets are available at $50 at outlets including City Esso Automart in Hamilton and the Pro Shop on Reid Street, or from committee members Jennings at 705-4139; e-mail: grsasoccer@gmail.com or Patrick Bean at 732-6276; e-mail: beanpatrick@hotmail.com or at the door on the night.
