Binns strike proves just enough
Somerset Eagles 1 Devonshire Colts 0
Duval Binns netted a soft goal seconds before the interval to give Eagles the points they deserved from this Premier Division game at White Hill Field yesterday.
The midfielder sealed Colts' fate when the defence failed to clear, Binns smartly dribbling around stranded goalkeeper Khabir Dill before planting the ball into the back of the net.
In a game in which neither team threatened to over-run the other, Colts, still without a win this season, held a slight advantage during the first half but were seldom able to mount a sustained attack.
Jermaine Belboda and Damon Francis both had chances during the first 20 minutes, the former watching as his angled shot was saved by a diving Adrian Burrows in the Eagles goal after 12 minutes and the latter looking on in astonishment as Kion Simmons cleared his piledriver from 16 yards off the goal-line. However, Eagles refused to yield and pinned down Colts for the remainder of the half.
Jelani Butterfield blasted over the bar after 30 minutes and Colts midfielder Joseph Butterfield headed a Lamaul Crofton shot, destined for the back of goal, away for a corner six minutes later while standing on the goal-line.
Steven Mendes, working hard in the middle for Colts, saw his ferocious shot from 15 yards pulled down by Burrows before Eagles hit back with Binns snatching what ultimately proved to be the winner.
Colts might have been expected to increase the tempo once play restarted but instead it was Eagles who played with more intensity.
Within three minutes, Colts 'keeper Dill showed his agility by diving full length to palm a free kick from Binns around the post for a corner and 10 minutes later substitute Darron Dowling was denied as the goalkeeper made a second sensational save by blocking his shot from 12 yards.
Aljame Zuill and Jamal Smith came off Colts' bench to add some much-needed punch into their front line but Eagles defence, marshalled well by centre-back Kion Simmons, coped comfortably.
Colts were reduced to 10 players after 86 minutes when goalkeeper Dill was ejected for handling the ball outside of the penalty box, foiling an effort by Crofton which was heading into goal.
