A drunken night out on his birthday cost a man more than $1,500 yesterday in Magistrates' Court.

Khabir Dill, 20, from Pembroke, was arrested last September after Police saw him deliberately jump on a woman's car twice.

Crown counsel Oonagh Vaucrosson told the court that uniformed officers near the Emporium Building on Front Street saw Dill jump on to the bonnet of a black car parked across the road.

"As the officers approached him, they saw Dill get off the car bonnet, reposition himself, and then jump backwards on to the bonnet and as he landed he pushed his arms down (on the vehicle) as though to cause maximum damage," said Mrs. Vaucrosson.

She said he was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station for questioning, leaving behind several dents in the bonnet of the car.

When interviewed, Dill, a labourer, told Police he was extremely drunk and had been out with his cousins celebrating his 20th birthday.

He said he just got carried away and admitted the crime to the officers.

But Mrs. Vaucrosson said the car owner had received two estimates to get the damage repaired, and one had been $1,049 and the other had been $1,700.

Asked if he had anything to say, Dill said: "I could pay for the car and I am sorry for what I did. May I have a month to pay for it.

"It was my birthday and I just went overboard."

Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves fined Dill $250 for the crime, payable by Friday, or 40 days in jail, and ordered him to pay the woman $1,325 compensation by May 9, or face 90 days in jail.
