MPs look at need for sex offenders register

Renee Ming

A Joint Select Committee to look into the need for a public sex offenders register has been established.

Progressive Labour Party MP Renée Ming will chair the Parliamentary Committee whose membership will include PLP MPs Chris Famous and Michael Weeks, and One Bermuda Alliance MPs Jeff Baron and Craig Cannonier.

Ms Ming tabled the motion establishing the committee in the early hours of Saturday morning. It was widely endorsed by both sides of the House.

The motion stated that MPs will “examine, review and make recommendations, and report to the House its findings on existing legislation which addresses the necessity for a public sex offenders register along with other pertinent matters”.

OBA MP Trevor Moniz supported the creation of the committee. He also pointed out that a similar committee had been established in November 2014, although it had never provided a report back to the House.
