PLP calls for creation of sex offenders database

Supporter: Walter Roban

The introduction of a sex offenders database was last night backed by Shadow Public Safety Minister Walter Roban.

The Progressive Labour Party MP cited a spike in domestic violence and cases of inappropriate sexual conduct coming before the courts.

“Bermuda must cultivate a culture of zero tolerance for these despicable acts and end the culture of silence and cover-up that has often seen society’s predators go uncharged, unconvicted and unpunished,” Mr Roban said.

He called on Bermudians to protect women and children through “listening and supporting them when these incidents occur”, as well as speaking out when aware of such cases.

Mr Roban urged residents to offer support, both financially and through volunteering, to help organisations such as the Physical Abuse Centre, the Women’s Resource Centre and Family Centre.
