Mr. Coxall's car was in collision with another car on a sharp bend on Happy Valley Road near the junction with Montpelier Road in Pembroke.

Red-faced Police yesterday reported that the incident was being investigated.

It was not known whether anyone will be charged with a motoring offence in connection with the accident.

Police spokesman P.c. Gary Venning said the accident happened just after 12.30 p.m. on one of the bends in the road.

Mr. Coxall was travelling west on Happy Valley Road while the other vehicle, a Mazda 323, driven by Safeguard Security president Paul Field, was travelling in the opposite direction when the accident occurred.

P.c. Venning added that there were no injuries and only minimal damage to both vehicles.

Mr. Coxall was not available for comment and Mr. Field declined when contacted yesterday.

But National Liberal Party Chairman Charles Jeffers -- who has campaigned for road improvements in the Happy Valley area to safeguard pedestrians -- said road accidents were not unusual on that stretch of road.

And he pointed out that had anyone been walking along the road at the accident scene the results could have been much worse.

He added the potential for serious accidents would dramatically increase after the opening of the new senior secondary school, CedarBridge Academy, scheduled for later this year.

Mr. Jeffers, earlier this year, warned: "There will be heavier pedestrian traffic when the school opens, with children who live in the area walking to school.

"And the traffic, already heavy at peak times is bound to increase.'' But yesterday Works and Engineering Minister C.V. (Jim) Woolridge said: "The entire populace of Bermuda knows that Happy Valley Road is a very unique road in that it is winding.'' "Although we regret that someone had an accident there, let this remind people to be careful on narrow roads especially in the rain.''
