Woman sentenced to two years probation after theft

A woman who stole more than $2,500 from a business was sentenced to two years of probation.

Kalae Adams, 40, admitted stealing from The Hub in Warwick when she appeared in Magistrates’ Court in February.

She reappeared in court last week for sentencing.

Adams, from Southampton, stole $2,545 while working at the business between April and May 2023.

Former independent political candidate Gavin Kennedy, who owns the store, saw Adams on video stealing the cash and reported the incident to police.

Prosecutor Matthew Frick requested that Adams be fined for the offence and pay Mr Kennedy restitution, which she told police she would do.

Chardonnai Hughes, Adams’s lawyer, suggested she be given a conditional discharge.

Adams apologised for her actions, said Mr Kennedy was a “good friend” and that she used the stolen cash to help others.

Magistrate Maria Sofianos ordered Adams to pay restitution, participate in any programmes recommended by her probation officer and return to court next month for a review.
