A Pembroke middle school won $5,000 for a mural designed to capture Bermuda in a pop art style.

Dellwood Middle School took home the first-place prize after going up against 16 other schools in a painting competition.

The contest, sponsored by the Green family in partnership with the Bermuda National Gallery, challenged youngsters to adhere to the theme “Bermuda in the Style of Andy Warhol”.

Dellwood did a painting based off Warhol’s iconic Campbell’s Soup Cans with the colours and icons changed to reflect Bermuda.

The pupils brainstormed how they wanted to proceed, whittling 16 ideas down to their favourite eight.

Victor Scott Primary School received $3,000 for the second-place mural, which depicted Bermuda onions and Bermudiana flowers.

Somersfield Academy, which submitted a painting of Bermuda kites flying over Bermuda rooftops, received a $2,000 cheque for third place.

Murals from all 17 participating schools have been installed around the Luscar Place construction site on Pitts Bay Road in Pembroke, and will stay there for the remainder of the project.

All participating schools also received a $1,000 donation, while leftover painting supplies were given to the Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation.

Alexander Green said on behalf of the Green family: “The artistic expression of the school students was tremendous.

“During the competition, judges and onlookers were captivated by the vibrant ideas and boundless imagination displayed by our young people.

“We encourage our community to admire the students’ murals on display.”

Jennifer Philips, the director of BNG, said: “We would like to thank the Green family for their continued encouragement and hosting of the mural competition, as well as our incredible volunteers, whose assistance ensured the event ran smoothly.

“The creativity on display was so inspiring and all the young artists appeared to be thoroughly enjoying themselves.

“We hope students will continue their exploration of Andy Warhol by visiting the Bermuda National Gallery to view ‘Portraits from the Factory’, which opens at the end of this month.

“Admission is free and, as always, BNG will be offering free class tours for schools and camps, which can be booked online.”
