St George’s and Bailey’s Bay poised for T20 KO Cup final showdown
Champions St George’s and Bailey’s Bay will square off in what promises to be an explosive Premier Division T20 KO Cup final derby showdown between the East End rivals at Lord’s in St David’s tomorrow.
Both teams are expected to be at full strength with the return of their players who represented Bermuda at the recent ICC T20 World Cup Americas Regional Final in Toronto.
St George’s have a psychological edge over Bay having beaten them in the only other meeting between the teams this year in the opening round of the T20 league campaign.
Bay are coming off a loss to Somerset in their 50-overs season opener last weekend, while St George’s had a bye.
Clay Smith, the St George’s coach, expects his team to put in 100 per cent effort as they attempt to tighten their grip on the trophy.
“We are happy to get to another final but getting there is not enough for us as we are defending champions, so we will be playing with pride and giving it all we got,” Smith told The Royal Gazette.
“We are up against a very good Bailey’s Bay team that beat St David’s to get to the final, so they have to be respected. The two of us have had several battles over the last few years and we respect them highly.
“But once we get on the field, I expect my players to shift gears and to have that killer instinct where we leave it all on the field.”
Gus Logie, the Bay coach, is also looking for his players to live up to their potential and do themselves and their community proud.
“It’s exciting times and an opportunity for Bay to again possibly get some silverware but more importantly for us to play the kind of quality cricket that we know we can play,” he said.
“With the players that we have available for Sunday it makes for a very interesting final. I think both teams should be at full strength and at the end of the day there should be no excuses.
“It should be good cricket with some of the players coming back from their tour to Canada. They should be in good form and confident, so I would think the public will be treated to some quality cricket.
“The venue down at St David’s has always been a good hunting ground for us as well and we look forward to the challenge and the opportunity to do ourselves proud as individuals, as a team and as a community.“
The match begins at 2.30pm and will be preceded by the First Division final between Southampton Rangers and Western Stars, which gets under way at 10.30am.
Rangers are the overwhelming favourites heading into the second straight meeting between the teams ,having already beaten Stars twice this season, including a humbling 225-run victory in a lopsided 50-overs league affair at Southampton Oval last weekend.
Challengers Stars find themselves in a position to claim two trophies over the weekend as they will attempt to dethrone champions Devonshire Rec in the Central Counties final at Devonshire Recreation Club today.
Devonshire have made four changes to their team with the addition of national team duo Derrick Brangman and Onias Bascome, Isaiah O’Brien and Allan Douglas Jr from the one that beat Evening League side North Village by 121 runs in the first round of the competition last weekend.
The champions have a solid team on paper with the likes of captain George O’Brien Jr, Kamau Leverock, former Stars player Treadwell Gibbons Jr and wicketkeeper Ricardo Brangman also in their line-up.
Stars have yet to reveal their team for today’s final, which starts at 11am.
