Bernice Winifred Delores Smith rang in her 100th birthday surrounded by friends and family at the Grotto Bay Beach Resort last week.

A government spokeswoman described Mrs Smith as the oldest living resident of St David’s and a pillar of her community.

“Bernice Smith’s roots run deep, with her family helping to establish beloved institutions like St Luke’s AME Church and St David’s Primary School,” the spokeswoman said.

“She is still full of vitality. With a sharp mind and independent spirit, she enjoys her garden and continues to inspire all who know her.

“Her life is a living tapestry of devotion, strength and warmth.

“The Government of Bermuda extends its sincerest congratulations and best wishes to Mrs Smith, a treasured Bermudian whose legacy continues to bloom.”

David Burt, the Premier, and Lovitta Foggo, the MP for St David’s, took part in the birthday celebrations, offering the senior warm wishes on behalf of the island.
