Colts Cup Match rivals ring the changes
Somerset wicketkeeper-batter Zeri Tomlinson will come up against his former St George’s team-mates when the two rivals clash head on in the Annual Colts Cup Match at Wellington Oval tomorrow.
The Bermuda Under-19 captain was a member of the St George’s team that pulled off a stunning one-run win over hosts Somerset last year but has since switched allegiances.
The Warwick Workmen’s Club player will also feature for the President’s XI in Somerset’s final Cup Match trial today.
Tomlinson will also come up against Warwick team-mate Luke Horan, who played an integral role in St George’s narrow win last year.
The all-rounder produced an outstanding match haul of seven for 39 from 15 overs — including a magical spell as Somerset collapsed improbably with victory in sight — to lead St George’s to glory and deservedly walk away with MVP accolades.
Somerset were coasting along at 202 for two replying to St George’s 221 all out when Horan was brought back into the attack for a fifth spell and claimed six wickets for no runs from 14 balls to turn the match on its head.
St George’s have made five changes to their team from last year with Jabari Darrell, De-Nyi Thomas, Shane Robinson, Xavier James and Logan Jones replacing Jahre Blakeney, Marcus Scotland, Jarryd Richardson, Q’Shai Darrell and Tomlinson.
The hosts also have a new captain in Oyinde Bascome, who takes over the reins from Darrell, who has aged out of the 23-and-under event. Also ineligible is anyone who has played in Cup Match.
Somerset, who are travelling to the East End with hopes of regaining the cup after a two-year absence, and are also under new leadership with club player Jerez Eve replacing Dominic Sabir as captain.
Eve is among seven new faces in Somerset’s team, who includes Zakao Hart, Sa-Qui Robinson, Dionte Dowling, Jamori Manders, Brianna Ray and Tomlinson. Gone are Sabir, Jermal Proctor, Sharye Tavares, Jamie MacFarlane, Dalin Richardson, Jaiden Manders, Nirobi Smith-Mills and Sabir.
Action gets under way at Wellington Oval tomorrow at 10am.
