Nahki Wells provides winning assist for Luton on opening day
Nahki Wells provided the match-winning assist for his new club as the domestic football season resumed in England on Friday.
Wells clipped a ball into the box from the left wing that was headed into his own net by defender Ryan Johnson as Luton Town opened their campaign with a 1-0 home win over AFC Wimbledon.
In a game of few chances, Wells had probably the best opportunity of the first half in the 24th minute after a ball ricocheted to him inside the penalty area. He showed his customary elegance to swivel to his left but Wimbledon defender Isaac Ogundere threw his body to block the shot.
The opening match of the season featured two teams who suffered contrasting fortunes last term, with Luton being relegated for the second straight year, this time from the Championship, and AFC Wimbledon promoted from League Two.
But there was little difference in quality between the two teams, with Luton, the preseason favourites to win the league, providing the only shot on target.
Wells joined Luton last month after his contract expired at Bristol City and Bermuda fans will be hoping he can stay injury free for the first month of the new season with the national team set to face Jamaica in a crucial World Cup qualifier on September 5.
