Delray Rawlins ‘disappointed’ to miss out on milestone

Delray Rawlins concedes he was “disappointed” to come up agonisingly shy of his first Cup Match century.

The star St George’s batter fell just two runs short of the personal milestone after resuming day two on 76. After surviving a potential run out, he was making serene progress towards his century but then lost his wicket in agonising circumstances.

Rawlins was hit on the side as he tried to flick a Malachi Jones delivery down leg side, with the ball dropping to the deck and rolling slowly back on to the stumps.

“Obviously it would have been nice to get to a personal milestone,” Rawlins said. “A hundred is big and in Cup Match is probably one of the biggest achievements you can get on the island.

“I’m obviously disappointed and, to be honest, I probably could have played it differently in hindsight. But I am happy with 98 as I was just trying to contribute to my team’s total.”

Rawlins, whose marathon innings contained seven sixes and eight fours, feels the outcome of the match could have been different had it not been for the significant time lost on the second day as a result of rain.

“The rain this morning was not ideal for us and obviously it’s a different game then,” he said.

“You cannot control the weather and it is what it is. We just have to prepare again for next year and go again.”

Despite coming up short of their objective of winning back the trophy, Rawlins feels St George’s can be proud of their performance this year.

“Obviously we have copped a lot of flak over the last couple of years,” he said.

“We’ve lost a lot of games by heavy margins and I think the performances we put in over the last two days showed a lot of fight, a lot of character, a lot of skill, and a lot of thought.

“I am just proud of the boys and looking forward to the next couple of years. I am looking forward to building on it.”
