Kevon Fubler spins St David’s within sight of 50 Overs title
Lord’s, St David’s (St David’s won toss): St David’s beat Flatts by eight wickets
Kevon Fubler spun his way to a maiden five-wicket haul playing in St David’s colours as the islanders made light work of ten-man Flatts Victoria Club in a lopsided Premier Division 50 Overs contest today.
The left-arm spinner bagged six for 21 from the northern end as Flatts were skittled for 73 in 22.1 overs.
Fubler was brought into the attack after four overs, with Flatts 27 without loss and made an immediate impact as he produced a double-wicket maiden to get his spell off to a flying.
The 34-year-old made the initial breakthrough with his second ball when he had opening bat Shane Robinson caught for five at slip by Onias Bascome.
Fubler trapped Jermaine Clarke plumb leg-before for a duck four balls later to turn the tide in St David’s favour.
The St George’s Cup Match and Bermuda spinner also picked up two wickets in his third over as Flatts continued to unravel.
He had Flatts captain Dajon Carey leg-before for 17, and was off celebrating again two balls later after Jan-Johan Nel played on for eight.
Fubler completed his five-wicket haul in his eighth over when Paul Harvey was grabbed by Chris Pitcher at mid-off for three and then pinned Angus Betts in front without scoring on the way to another maiden wicket in his next over.
Bascome removed last man Kijuan Franks for five with his only ball bowled.
“I was looking to bowl on centre stump because I know I turn it away from all right-handers,” Fubler told The Royal Gazette.
“They have all right-handers so I knew I would get wickets and just executed from there.”
Fellow left-arm spinner Derrick Brangman, the St David’s captain, claimed two for 17 in his unchanged nine overs from the club end.
Carey and all-rounder Nelson Bascome Jr (12) were the only Flatts batters in double figures, while St David’s leaked 15 extras, including 12 wides
St David’s replied with 77 for two in only 10.5 overs, with Tre Manders leading the chase with an aggressive 38 from 20 balls.
Manders, who hit two sixes and five fours in dominating a 51-run, second-wicket stand with Nazri Butterfield (11), used his feet well to pierce the gaps with some exquisite strokeplay.
It was perhaps fitting the Somerset Cup Match and Bermuda player scored the winning runs, which in he did in style after driving Nelson Bascome through the covers for four.
Betts (one for 20) and Bascome (one for 23) claimed the only St David’s wickets to fall.
The convincing win was the unbeaten islanders’ second in as many days, having handed relegated Cleveland an eight-wicket beating at the same venue on Saturday.
Fubler again led their attack, claiming thee for 16, while second-change Manders took two for 47 as Cleveland posted 165 for nine in their allotted overs after electing to take first strike.
St David’s replied with 167 for two in 27.1 overs with Onias Bascome (63) and Manders (52) leading the charge with unbeaten fifties, and Dean Simons adding 31 from the top of the order.
St David’s were 60 for two in the thirteenth over when Bascome and Manders came together at the crease and produced a match-winning, 107-run partnership for the third wicket that carried their team across the line with 22.5 overs to spare.
The back-to-back victories have boosted St David’s 50 Overs title hopes with a game in hand over fellow contenders Somerset and St George’s.
“It’s been a good weekend for our team and we feel good about our chances of winning the league,” St David’s coach Ricky Brangman said.
“We are just looking at playing one game at a time and keeping the morale high.”
