In a midnight update, the Bermuda Weather Service said Tropical Storm Erin was not a threat to the island.

It said the closest point the weather system was forecast to pass the island was 1,060 nautical miles to the southeast at approximately 12am on Friday, August 14.

“However, this system may move closer to Bermuda after this time period depending upon its track,” the BWS said.

At 12am today, the weather system was 1,969 miles east-southeast of Bermuda moving west at 22 miles per hour.

According to the United States’ National Hurricane Centre, gradual strengthening of the weather system is forecast over the next several days and Erin could be at hurricane intensity by the latter part of this week.
