The American International Group has announced the recipients of a total of $35,000 in scholarships.

The funds are for youngsters who excel academically, and demonstrate exceptional leadership skills and community involvement.

This year’s scholarship winner, Navaeh Barclay, received $25,000 towards her academic pursuits.

Ms Barclay is a track-and-field athlete and leader in her community. She will enter her freshman year this fall at St John’s University in New York, where she plans to study actuarial science.

Cheron Hunt received a one-time $10,000 bursary for his computer science studies at Bournemouth University in England. Alongside his academic pursuits, he is also on the university’s basketball team.

“Navaeh and Cheron were selected from a group of highly accomplished Bermudian students,” said Jesse Haldeman, Bermuda country leader and head of Bermuda financial lines. “Their focus, drive, dedication to serve their community and leadership qualities made them excellent recipients, and we could not be more thrilled to continue the tradition of supporting the next generation of talent.”

Mr Haldeman said AIG remains committed to the community.

“The scholarship programme is a great way we are able to support Bermudian students as they fulfil their educational pursuits,” said McKeisha Smith, human resource leader at AIG. “We wish Navaeh, Cheron and our previous recipients all the best with their continued education.”

The AIG scholarship provides financial support for full-time study in undergraduate degrees at accredited universities. Awards are made every four years. Selection is based on a combination of academic acumen, character, community involvement and the interview.
