A “minor incident” at Belco’s power plant was neutralised, the electricity company said.

Wayne Caines, the president of Belco, confirmed that the incident took place last night during scheduled maintenance.

He explained: “The incident was quickly contained by our trained personnel before emergency services arrived.

“As is protocol, one truck from the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service attended, but was not required to take any action.”

The nature of the incident was not shared with the public.

According to Mr Caines, there was no risk to public safety and the power plant did not sustain any damage.

The island’s power supply was not affected by the incident.

Mr Caines said: “We remain committed to the safe and reliable operation of our facilities.

“Thank you to our staff, members of the BFRS and all of those who worked to ensure that this incident was brought under control quickly and safely.”
