Opposition makes three Senate appointments

‘Valuable experience’: Victoria Cunningham has been appointed as Opposition Senate Leader (Photo supplied)

The One Bermuda Alliance has announced the appointment of Victoria Cunningham as its Senate leader as well as the introduction of Tarik Smith and Dion Smith to the Upper House.

Robert King, the Leader of the Opposition, who appointed the trio, said each brought “valuable experience, vision and a strong dedication to public service”.

A spokeswoman for the OBA said: “Together, they will advance the OBA’s priorities of transparency, accountability, economic opportunity and ensuring that the Government works for all Bermudians.”

Mr King also extended thanks to outgoing OBA senators Marcus Jones — who was made Opposition Senate leader after the General Election in February — and Maurice Foley.

Ms Cunningham will have responsibility for finance, education, health and legal affairs.

Tarik Smith will assume responsibility for youth, social development and seniors, national security, tourism, transport, culture and sport, and economy and labour.

Meanwhile, Dion Smith will have responsibility for public works and environment, housing and municipalities, the Cabinet Office and digital innovation, and home affairs.

“All three senators have committed themselves to serve with integrity and independence, engaging constructively on issues that matter most — economic growth, job creation, public safety, education and healthcare — while always putting Bermudians first,” the OBA spokeswoman said.

“The Opposition affirms its readiness to work in the Senate to bring forward solutions and create a better Bermuda for all residents.

“We urge all stakeholders to join us in ensuring that the Senate is a place of robust debate, effective oversight and meaningful progress.”
