Beach volleyball team head to Punta Cana
Sean Tucker and Benjamin Barnett will compete for Bermuda on the North America, Central America and the Caribbean Beach Volleyball Tour in Dominican Republic this week..
Tucker and Barnett are heading to Punta Cana and will take on teams from other countries within the region, with Anguilla, Costa Rica, Canada, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, United States Virgin Islands, Mexico, Nicaragua, Trinidad & Tobago, United States and Venezuela all scheduled to cpmpete.
For Tucker, this event marks a quick turnaround after he competed on the tour in El Salvador earlier this month, where he was partnered by Kyle Hamilton.
But Tucker’s partnership with Barnett in May earned Bermuda a silver medal at the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association Men’s Championships, the island’s best finish at the zonal competition.
“We are excited to participate at the Norceca level,” Tucker said.
“We continue to improve and after our performance at the ECVA level, we are ready to see how we can do against some of the best.”
Barnett views the trip to Dominican Republic as another chance to test himself against the best in the region.
“Playing at this level pushes us to bring out our best,” he said.
“Every match is a chance to learn and we’re proud to carry Bermuda’s flag on the international stage.”
Head coach Mark Hamilton is looking to build on the impressive display at the ECVA competition.
“Following a strong showing in El Salvador, Bermuda’s beach volleyball scene continues to rise,” Hamilton said.
“Tucker returns to the sand, this time teaming up with Ben Barnett for the men’s tournament in the Dominican Republic.
“The pair made waves earlier this year at the ECVA event, earning a hard-fought silver medal and narrowly missing gold in a thrilling third set.
“Ben and Sean have already proven their strength as a team and now the stakes are even higher as Bermuda faces heavy hitters like the United States, Canada, Mexico and Cuba, some of the strongest teams in the world.
“I’ve watched them grow in this sport and am excited to see them perform together again.”
