Young running talent shines at Arboretum
Some of Bermuda’s brightest young running talent swapped the track for the grass on Saturday.
The Bermuda National Athletics Association held its first cross county meeting of the season at the Arboretum, with more than 100 runners taking the opportunity to compete across 15 categories in stifling heat.
Most eyes were on the competitive junior divisions, with Riana Robinson and Sanchez Smith taking top honours among those aged 14 and older.
Smith completed the two-mile course in 11min 4.60sec, winning by more than 50 seconds from Timothy Pearman (11:55.10) and Tobiah Goodchild (12:12.70).
Robinson had an even bigger margin of victory in the girls race, crossing the line in 13:28.10, more than a minute ahead of her nearest rival Kelise Wade (14:41.50), with Azari Jones (15:10.90) finishing third.
In the 12-13 age group, again racing over two miles, Spencer Haldeman (11:55.40) beat Ronan Davidge (13:08.10) and George Morris (13:14.80), while Sukanya Jobson (13:58.50) took top spot among the girls with a wide-margin victory over Charleigh Gilchrist (15:52.40) and Avery Haldeman (16:06.10)
Runners aged 11 and under were asked to run only a mile and Aalirah Daniels and Liam Horrobin picked up the wins in the 10-11 division.
Daniels (7:00.93) was involved in an epic battle with Yara Muhammad (7:01.20), eventually winning by less than a second, with Kamari Brooke-Gibbons (7:11.18) following them home in third.
Horrobin (6:12.07) had a more comfortable 19 seconds to spare over Matthew Hoey (6:31.51), who took the runner-up place, and Kaleb Curling (6:50.43)
It was a good day for the Horrobin family with younger sibling Nolan (6:17.20) picking up the victory in the boys under-10 age group. He beat Elliott Davidge (6:51.90), with Theodore Smith (6:57.80) finishing third.
Giselle Reid-Rubaine was successful in the youngest girls age division. She took the tape in 7:10.50, just ahead of Vivienne Fox (7:14.20) and Diamond Morris (7:32.70).
But it was not just the youngsters in action at the Arboretum with Rose-Anna Hoey clocking 21:32.80 when successful over three miles in the women’s 40-49 age group. John Balbach (24:08.90) stood tallest on the podium in the men’s 40--49 division, with William Wharton (24:01.90) and Sean Kelly (27:58.90) taking the big prize in the men’s 50-59 and 60-69 categories respectively.
