Free eye screening on World Sight Day

An eye care practice in Hamilton will offer free eye screening on World Sight Day next month.

Insight Comprehensive Eye Care said screenings will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis, by appointment only on October 9.

This year, the event will be observed under the theme “Love Your Eyes”.

The practice said that the annual campaign encourages people everywhere to prioritise eye health and reminds communities of the importance of accessible and affordable eye care.

“Eye health is too often overlooked until vision loss begins to interfere with daily life,” Lucia Kuffová, a consultant ophthalmologist at Insight said.

She added: “Events like World Sight Day are a reminder that regular eye checks are essential, even if you feel your sight is fine.”

Insight said that the clinic was designed to help identify potential vision problems and raise awareness about the importance of preventive eye care.

It added that conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic eye disease are common but treatable if caught early.

The practice said: “Sight is something many of us take for granted. Every day, activities like driving, working, reading or even browsing on a phone rely on healthy vision.

“Yet as we age, we can develop conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration or glaucoma — all of which can significantly reduce vision if left untreated.

“With timely diagnosis and treatment, however, many eye conditions can be slowed, managed or even reversed.”

Residents were encouraged to take the opportunity to learn more about protecting their vision and to consider regular checkups as part of their overall health routine.

Insight also invited the community to consider supporting local organisations that provide vital services for people living with eye disease.

It said donations to Vision Bermuda, the Bermuda Diabetes Association or the Lady Cubitt Compassionate Association help to make sure that those in need can access sight-saving care and support.
