A school’s fundraising race united alumni and pupils to boost its athletic programme. The Somersfield Academy 5K Fun Run was led by eight of the school’s equity and merit scholars, who contributed to the races with the help of volunteers. Riki Teteina, the head of Somersfield, said that the event on Sunday reflected how the school was growing in both numbers and communal strength.

He added: “As we approach the conclusion of our 2023-27 strategic plan, it is inspiring to see our scholars leading, our parents and alumni sharing their expertise.

“This momentum affirms that we are building something truly special together and the future of Somersfield is incredibly exciting.”

More than 900 runners participated across 24 races, which included a 400 metre children’s race, a one mile youth race and a five kilometre family running and walking race.

It was supported with the help of 32 volunteers and an anonymous donor family that allowed for the presentation of 72 medals.

The equity and merit scholars — pupils recognised for their academic skill and potential for global leadership — played integral parts in many events.

They included Roman Jones, who played “rabbit” in the Montessori Children’s House and primary school races.

The volunteers were led by Vivienne Lochhead, who brought experience as a national-level triathlete and a running club coach.

Ms Lochhead said: “It was awesome to see so many kids competing, smiling and hopefully beginning a lifelong passion for running.”

The event came after the school last year set a new record by winning four interschool championship titles in netball, badminton and basketball.

The school said earlier that the cash raised would go towards expanding the school athletics programme and potentially lead to more historic successes.
