Bermuda College tips hat to supporters
Past students and employees of the Bermuda College are among a host of individuals who will be honoured at an event this month for supporting the institution over the years.
The college will also honour several companies as part of its “Built to Last” campaign, which it rolled out this year to highlight the importance of skilled trades to the island.
It said that almost 30 individuals will be honoured at the special ceremony on October 8 at its Paget campus as they have “quite literally built Bermuda”.
The college said that the campaign celebrates alumni, as well as former employees, who enrolled in technical education and went on to make significant contributions in their fields and communities.
It said four Bermudian-based companies will be honoured for their support of technical, culinary and hospitality education.
Mark Berry, a former Bermuda College foundation chairman, and Gary Madeiros, the sitting chairman, will be recognised for their longstanding contributions to the institution’s development.
David Sam, the Bermuda College president, who initiated the campaign, said the event will highlight the accomplishments of alumni, former employees and community partners.
Dr Sam added: “These are people whose work in trades, culinary arts, hospitality and technical education has made a real difference in Bermuda’s development.
“This is about celebrating those contributions, but also inspiring a new generation to see the trades as a meaningful and rewarding path.”
The college said multiple nominations were submitted and carefully reviewed by its selection committee.
The panel included Karmeta Hendrickson, the support staff president, Teneika Eve, the faculty association chairwoman, Joseph Weeks, the interim technical education chairman, and Necheeka Trott, an assistant to the president for strategic and special projects.
The event, for which attendance is by invitation only, will be streamed live on the college’s YouTube channel and Facebook page.
