Keile swings for an artistic home run in tribute to Big Blue Machine

A Bermudian artist has set out to celebrate a local sports team that dominated the region 50 years ago, with a mural at the Michael Preece Softball Diamond.

Keile Rabain, the artist behind the mural, said she was inspired to pay tribute to the Big Blue Machine, Bermuda’s dominant softball team throughout the Caribbean during the 1970s.

Ms Rabain said: “It was really a pleasure to create something to honour them.

“A lot of people in my age group and below don’t really know about them, so it’s nice to highlight them and share a little bit of that knowledge about this amazing team.”

She said the project took about two weeks to complete, with the work being slowed down by the recent unsettled weather including Hurricane Imelda.

The mural is one of several works by Ms Rabain, who was involved in the Bermuda Walls festival this year, including a mural on Canal Road of a mother sewing a Gombey costume.

She said: “We see a lot of artistic work about Gombeys, but Gombey costume-making is an art form itself, and that’s something I really wanted to highlight.

“I try to create murals that are inspired by Bermudian life, Bermudian art and Bermudian nature.”
